It's probably better to use SPANIM here you could do the same thing with SPCHR, but it's more complicatedmost of the examples aren't very well written anyway like they all use GOTO and GOSUB and never use functions or WHILE/WEND/REPEAT/UNTILneither one can ever cause slowdown unless you use they way more than you need to*use them way more

  173. Sam
  174. snail_
    >"That's basically it, 12me. Your language should NOT depend on formatting for syntax (AHEM python)"I don't NECESSARILY agree with this one because the more I look at python and its contemporaries it's a bit easier to read without keyword hellthough maybe the solution is to be less strict about syntax, or more terse.moonscript is a less extreme example. significant whitespace but it figures it out for you if you're consistent
  175. Lumage
but it allows the style to be enforced by the user/environment
  176. snail_
    every programmer writes differently though
  177. Lumage
    forcing whitespace doesn't fix that
  178. snail_
    very true
  179. Lumage
    that's like... hm
  180. snail_
I don't think it's necessarily okay to force an extremely rigid programming style upon the user. that's kinda hostileyou can use a hammer for more than just nails
  181. Lumage
That's like saying "okay, you need to use two spaces after a period instead of one because your diction is different from mine"
  182. snail_
    i hate people who double-space
  183. Lumage
it might make things more readable in general, but it doesn't fix differences, it's easy to machine-correct, and it's hard to relearn
  184. snail_
same as people who omit the oxford comma
  185. Lumage
(and it's a matter of opinion anyway)more helpful for readability is good paragraph separation and, you know, not typing in Comic Sans.
  186. snail_
I hate the use of semicolons as statement-enders, but using newlines to do the same thing is "whitespace" or structure, isnt it
  187. Imasheep has left the chat.
  188. Lumage
  189. snail_
what gets me is using a semicolon and THEN a newlineif they can both mean the same thing, make them interchangeable
  190. Lumage
anyway forcing "style" only makes sense for beginners. The problem there is that the basic of style are part of learning and developing one's programming ability.
  191. snail_
some languages use the semicolon like how SB uses : and that makes sense to me
  192. Lumage
I disagree.the semicolon is most useful over newline for statements like this:let vector = [K1+K2, K3+K4, K5+K6, K7+K8];it's readability, but you have to comprise for machine readability and human readability and the semicolon does that well, in my opinion.
  193. Guzzler829

  483. Trinitro21
i think as long as it's not inappropriate it could be accepted
  484. GoodGameGod
One of the comedy sketches I had in mind might be a little too...MuchIt involves one of the characters giving the other one a can of assorted nutsBut then he goes on to say things like "Please enjoy my nuts"

is that the extent of the humoradult
  486. GoodGameGod

Me, sure, but not everyone else here.CurrentlyHe does doesn't he?Though I cannot judge, I rarely will say "Sup'puppies"When greeting someone. And I also was joking around with my sister at work today, but confusing an old lady.*ByThe lady had no money, so she wasn't going to buy anything, so when my sister was showing her what we had to sell, (French bread, cupcakes, pizza...) every time she finished saying something like "We have fresh loafs of French bread" I would nod and say "Hodoor"It took everything for her not to laugh.
  501. Trinitro21

It's from game of thrones, one of the characters can only say "Hodoor" (Or is it Hodor?)Pronounced: Hoe-door

  583. snail_
Nintendo Hard is often really artificial but I guess that's fine if you're into itlike the fucking motion control stages from galaxy 1the wii remote sensors are so bad that it makes it harder
  584. GoodGameGod
I eventually beat it, but it's still a great example of it being hard to play video games at peak performance when people are watching. Snail, SMgalaxy2's the perfect run was insane.

Mostly, but the level was well designed to provide a challenge, and it took hours to beat so...
  592. snail_
that shit is intenseIt's hard to make a game that's both challenging and extremely balanced though so to each their own
  593. GoodGameGod
The level with 3 lives isn't hard if you're good at it. (Ahem, me)
  594. LacksHead Admin
dark souls on a racing wheel intense?
  595. snail_
    no not that bad lol
  596. GoodGameGod
  597. 12Me21Admin
I sort of wish they'd do something like mario 64, where there are just a few large levels with a bunch of stars in each one
  598. GoodGameGod
It was a different kind of hard.
  599. snail_
except with good platforming you mean?
  600. 12Me21Admin
rather than having levels that you only ever see once
  601. GoodGameGod
    Platformer hard
  602. snail_
    honestly mario64 plays pretty badly
  603. 12Me21Admin
    well of course
  604. GoodGameGod
  605. 12Me21Admin
    it's pretty old
  606. snail_
especially if you grew up after the fact like I did
  607. 12Me21Admin
    and the DS version sucks
  608. LacksHead Admin
and the first mario game with a joystick
  609. GoodGameGod
The DS version camera was a pain
  610. snail_
    with the PS2 platformers
  611. 12Me21Admin
"hey let's make a 3D game where you move with the D-pad"
  612. GoodGameGod
I still enjoy playing the old games though.
  613. LacksHead Admin
when it came out it was really good and not all that frustrating to control
  614. snail_
I don't have that nostalgia for it so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  615. GoodGameGod
    Thank you lacksI agree
  616. snail_
give me Ape Escape 2 instead
  617. 12Me21Admin
I think they should port mario 64 to the switch or something
  618. snail_
yeah it was great then but now it feels sooo bad
  619. 12Me21Admin
or the 3DS even, but it's too late for that I think
  620. snail_
Odyssey is hopefully gonna be a successor to 64so maybe you'll get your wish?
  621. 12Me21Admin
I mean I'm not even sure if it's a good wish
  622. LacksHead Admin
    mario in New York!
  623. GoodGameGod
    >That game looked subpar >Not the new Mario one, the other thing
  624. LacksHead Admin
    ape escape?
  625. snail_ has left the chat.
  626. 12Me21Admin
But they need to stop making mario games where you end up with 999 lives by the time you're 1/3 of the way through
  627. LacksHead Admin
they're kids games, 12too hard and no kid plays it
  628. 12Me21Admin
at that point they might as well remove the whole lives system
  629. GoodGameGod
I though snail was talking about the new game coming to the 3DS called "Odyssey"
  630. 12Me21Admin
weren't all mario games kids games?
  631. GoodGameGod
    I like kids games then
  632. LacksHead Admin
yes, hence why they are easy to beat but hard to master
  633. GoodGameGod
    Kids have all the fun
  634. LacksHead Admin
If you want story, pick up ANY AAA game from a current non-nintendo consoleCall of Duty has better story at this point ffs
  635. 12Me21Admin
I remember in the original NSMB I got a game over all the time and the "you need 5 star coins to save" thing was really mean but whatever
  636. GoodGameGod
    Eew non-Nintendo>Don't beat me
  637. 12Me21Admin
now it's just so easy to get lives, like NSMB 2 had a theme of "COINS YAY!!" and yet you still get an extra life from collecting 100 coins, even though you can get like 500 coins in a single level
  638. snail_ has entered the chat.
  639. GoodGameGod
I don't like 3D first person shooter games like call of duty.Just my preference
  640. LacksHead Admin
then you're stuck on nintendobecause nobody likes the 2d platformers we get for free every month on playstation
  641. GoodGameGod
No, but I'm waiting to find a game for other consoles I like
  642. LacksHead Admin
and they don't get taken away after a month
  643. snail_
there are more first person games than shooters
  644. 12Me21Admin
  645. snail_
and lacks, it's also really easy to make a shitty 2d platformer
  646. GoodGameGod
  647. LacksHead Admin
i know, look at nintendoit's their bread and butter
  648. snail_
it's easier to make a FPS with good mechanics, honestlyI mean like, it's an easy formula to fuck up
  649. LacksHead Admin
    bull shit
  650. snail_
    physics most importantly
  651. 12Me21Admin
I bet most FPS games are probably made on the same engine anyway
  652. LacksHead Admin
you got jump dropI got bullet dropSo sorry I prefer my games more real and compelling than fake and cartoony kids crap
  653. snail_
you could make every weapon hitscan lolno more bullet drop
  654. 12Me21Admin
Anyway, in the older mario games, coins were like a reward; if there was a secret room, you'd get coins now it's not even worth collecting them unless there's like 1000 there
  655. snail_
that would actually be really awful
  656. GoodGameGod
Meh, I prefer platformers and indie games, and sometimes other games...But I've never really enjoyed any 3D-like games like Call of duty, skyrim, whatever else.
  657. LacksHead Admin
you mean like shooters on the nintendo, snail?
  658. PhilFish has entered the chat.
  659. snail_
    well no
  660. 12Me21Admin
"wait there are shooters on nintendo consoles?"
  661. LacksHead Admin
A console not capable of the physics required for realistic shooters?
  662. snail_
    well that's just not true.
  663. 12Me21Admin
It's probably capable but no developer would bother trying
  664. LacksHead Admin
pfftbecause there's no money in developing for a nintendo
  665. snail_
physics aren't hard if you have a Tegra doing the graphics lifting
  666. LacksHead Admin
  667. 12Me21Admin
because why make an FPS on the Wii U when you can make one on the PS4 which is like 10x more powerful
  668. LacksHead Admin
    and 10x the userbase
  669. 12Me21Admin
plus most people who want to actually PLAY that type of game have a PS/Xbox
  670. LacksHead Admin
but you're disregarding how SHIT the wiiu was
  671. GoodGameGod
I don't know why everyone hated the WII U...I enjoyed it.
  672. PhilFish
why make one on the PS4 when you can make one on PC which is like 3x more powerful
  673. 12Me21Admin
  674. LacksHead Admin
the only thing nintendo has going for it is a kid friendly environmenthere play this, there's no swearing or boobs
  675. 12Me21Admin
because YOUR PC might be 3x more powerful, but most people's aren't
  676. snail_
The Wii U was a total flop but I thought it was decent in execution, I liked the concept of the tablet thing
  677. PhilFish
    no mine isn't lmao
  678. snail_
but then you could only walk like 3ft away
  679. 12Me21Admin
it's much easier to make a game on a console where everyone's is the same
  680. PhilFish
but a lot of people who have a decent graphics card str
  681. GoodGameGod
And it had backwards comparability, unlike the ever-so-advanced sony and Microsoft.
  682. PhilFish
  683. LacksHead Admin
microsoft has backwards compatabilitySony wants moneyTechnically it's there PSnow
  684. 12Me21Admin
I remember playing mario 3d world land whatever in the closet while playing hide and seek that was fun
  685. LacksHead Admin
    it's a rental service
  686. snail_
anyway I'm not sure how this turned into an attack nintendo discussion, I like my games, you like yours, happy world
  687. 12Me21Admin
    pee snow
  688. LacksHead Admin
much like Nintendo's SHIT ASS offer of "one free rental a month"
  689. snail_
    I play PC games too
  690. GoodGameGod
Well lacks, Nintendo can't be that fucking bad, because you bought a 3DS.
  691. 12Me21Admin
    I like nintendo's handheld systems
  692. snail_
and PSNow is actually a pretty good service
  693. 12Me21Admin
    they have basically no competition
  694. LacksHead Admin
the system that gives me hand cramps
  695. snail_
like the game? you can buy it after you rent it
  696. PhilFish
the only nintendo thing I play is their 3DS
  697. 12Me21Admin
    other than phones which suck
  698. LacksHead Admin
I only play SB because I don't have to hold it
  699. GoodGameGod
    Enjoy you're PS-of-shit vita then
  700. LacksHead Admin
Sony: "Like the game? Keep it"who the fuck bought a gvita?
  701. snail_
haha lol mentioning the vita in an argument
  702. LacksHead Admin
enjoy your New 2 ds XL
  703. snail_
    instant way to lose credibility
  704. LacksHead Admin
how many fucking console mashup names is that?
  705. 12Me21Admin
enjoy your 3 exclusive n3DS gamesor is it up to 5 now?half of those are in SB though
  706. snail_
    Snes virtual console
  707. LacksHead Admin
    block racer
  708. PhilFish
well SNES VC are n3DS exclusives
  709. snail_
    I guess
  710. LacksHead Admin
  711. GoodGameGod
    >If the 2DS XL sells more then the vita, then I'm going to die of laughter
  712. snail_
  713. 12Me21Admin
yes as if SNES games are n3DS exclusive
  714. snail_
  715. LacksHead Admin
The New 3DS is so weak they put super mario rpg on the wiiu instead
  716. 12Me21Admin
also most of them were ported to the GBA too
  717. PhilFish
    >I have a GBA SP still
  718. GoodGameGod
Your right lacks, the n3DS should be more like the vita
  719. 12Me21Admin
I have one "still" as well
  720. GoodGameGod
  721. 12Me21Admin
except I got it recently for free
  722. LacksHead Admin
you mean, being able to play GTA 5 on your vita?
  723. GoodGameGod
But can run some good looking games
  724. snail_
lol the snes emulator ninty made for it probably didn't support the compression expansion chip SMRPG had
  725. 12Me21Admin
all of you guys's arguments suckwell msot*most
  726. LacksHead Admin
yeah, it'd be nice to play BotW on your nintendo instead of making a whole console to be portable
  727. snail_
    botw is playable though
  728. LacksHead Admin
    not on your 3ds
  729. GoodGameGod
    >What's botw
  730. snail_
it's more a Wii U port than a switch game though so it doesn't perform very great
  731. LacksHead Admin
whereas, oh, what's this? I got The Witcher 3 on my ps vitaoh, look at that
  732. snail_
and the switch seems portable to me, I've never used one personally, but it's no bigger than the Wii U Rectanglesmaller I think
  733. GoodGameGod
    >Oh look at that, the vita went down again in sales today
  734. 12Me21Admin
that sounds about as portable as a school textbook
  735. LacksHead Admin
    amen 12
  736. GoodGameGod
    The switch is nice
  737. snail_
you can carry a book can't you? portable
  738. LacksHead Admin
    but expensive for a paperweight
  739. 12Me21Admin
I'm not sure why I'm supporting Lacks here I guess because his arguments are better technically
  740. snail_
anyway this just became an elitists yelling at each other argument really quickly and I blame you all except 12
  741. LacksHead Admin
is 1.2.swich still the 2nd highest selling switch game?
  742. snail_
    probably not
  743. LacksHead Admin
    oh yes
  744. snail_
Who pays attention to sales data
  745. LacksHead Admin
    the mario kart remake
  746. GoodGameGod
    Guilty @Snail
  747. 12Me21Admin
mario kart 8.1 is what they should've called it
  748. LacksHead Admin
people who want to know their console has a fucking future, snail
  749. snail_
yeah I guess you're right that was a stupid question
  750. LacksHead Admin
I can hear the nintendo 3rd party developers shutting their doors forever from here
  751. 12Me21Admin
the mario kart series is closely following windows versions for some reason
  752. snail_
yes as if they don't have any other platforms to choose from
  753. GoodGameGod
Hopefully they make more games for the switch, it's a good console
  754. LacksHead Admin
more games for me, less for you
  755. snail_
  756. PhilFish
anyone know the specs of a n3DS GPU?
  757. LacksHead Admin
even if you don't care, it matters
  758. snail_
    not good
  759. GoodGameGod
I'll be playing skyrim at the park while you play whatever is on your DEAD BATTERY vita
  760. LacksHead Admin
    yes, you can play both
  761. GoodGameGod
  762. LacksHead Admin
    again, I have no vita
  763. GoodGameGod
Then the 3DS is the best
  764. snail_
I thought the vita had decent battery life?
  765. LacksHead Admin
  766. GoodGameGod
    Because, there's nothing else
  767. LacksHead Admin
  768. 12Me21Admin
the best portable console maybe for now that is
  769. snail_
and the 3ds battery life is pretty bad too
  770. LacksHead Admin
best with nothing else just makes you king shit of turd island
  771. 12Me21Admin
nah it's pretty good if you don't keep the brightness all the way up constantly
  772. snail_
people who play on 5 are asking for otmine is always on 3 or belowsomehow it's still dead
  773. LacksHead Admin
Not my fault I took the ds outside like you should and can't see the screen on anything but 5
  774. GoodGameGod
The 3DS is the best a handheld that fits in a persons pocket can get lacks, what your looking for doesn't exist, and might not even be technologically possible.Or affordable
  775. snail_
I keep forgetting to turn it off at night
  776. LacksHead Admin
  777. 12Me21Admin
    oh which one?
  778. GoodGameGod
    It fits in mypocket
  779. LacksHead Admin
XL and 2dsain't fitting in my pockets
  780. 12Me21Admin
oh yeah the XL is too big I think
  781. GoodGameGod
    My XL n3DS
  782. LacksHead Admin
maybe back pockets, but I want to sit down
  783. snail_
handhelds in pockets is a stupid point to make because unless you have a clamshell case you're going to fuck up the buttons
  784. GoodGameGod
    Fits in my jeans
  785. 12Me21Admin
and the 2DS is the 2DS
  786. GoodGameGod
    just fine
  787. 12Me21Admin
I can fit the n3dS in my pocket but it's not super comfortable I guess you have a point
  788. snail_
at least 3ds had the circle pad and tried to fit in a thin space (not well)
  789. GoodGameGod
@Snail I think it's so that you don't "Fuck up" the screen lol
  790. 12Me21Admin
but at least I can put it somewhere without worrying about the screen getting damaged
  791. GoodGameGod
  792. LacksHead Admin
then put gorilla glass screens in it, gg instead of cheaping out on the easiest to scratch plastic ever
  793. 12Me21Admin
    I guess
  794. snail_
they make carry cases for a reasonbut gorilla glass isn't exactly a luxury either
  795. 12Me21Admin
It would really suck if phones just took over and dedicated handheld consoles died I'd hate to play on a shitty touch screen without any buttons or anything
  796. GoodGameGod
Carrying cases aren't practical, for a number of reasons
  797. 12Me21Admin
not practical on the 3DS, that is
  798. snail_
I mean the switch is a tablet with a control optionand a custom OSthe hardware is all tablet shit
  799. GoodGameGod
    Region free is nice
  800. snail_
    very little custom about it
  801. 12Me21Admin
cases work find on phones because phones are rectangles with basically no input
  802. LacksHead Admin
    and thin to begin with
  803. snail_
and iphones have gigantic hideous bezelsso that's pretty easy to put a case on
  804. GoodGameGod
It could have augmented reality support according to some people, as well as VR if you're into that...
  805. LacksHead Admin
although, I would buy a cell phone as thick as a 3ds if it meant not having to recharge every 16-24 hoursOMG, GGG
  806. snail_
I can't wait for those superbatteries
  807. LacksHead Admin
check out the pixel density on the switchnow compare it to a vr headsetyou will not be using the switch as a head set for sure
  808. snail_
the switch would probably connect to an external headset or something.
  809. 12Me21Admin
I think we should worry more about supporting actual good consoles than caring who made them
  810. snail_
using it AS the VR display would look so fucking BAD
  811. GoodGameGod
Augmented reality is still an option... Possibly...
  812. LacksHead Admin
with the IR camera?ha!they really put it in a good spot to use
  813. GoodGameGod
    With the joycons...
  814. snail_
we make special displays for VR for a REASON, which is why google cardboard is just a gimmick
  815. 12Me21Admin
google cardboard wasn't so bad I thought
  816. GoodGameGod
Well, I'm going to bed, it's almost 3am
  817. LacksHead Admin
google cardboard is the Drug Dealer giving you the first taste for free
  818. GoodGameGod
  819. snail_
well, if you have a super expensive phone with good pixel density
  820. LacksHead Admin
    good night
  821. snail_
which is like three of them
  822. 12Me21Admin
    but snail it's free
  823. snail_
    then it's okay
  824. GoodGameGod
It's been fun debating with you lacks. =P
  825. 12Me21Admin
other than a phone which most people have
  826. LacksHead Admin
samsung has been cardboard ready since the s5
  827. GoodGameGod has left the chat.
  828. 12Me21Admin
    "most people"you know
  829. snail_
Google cardboard isn't free, you have to buy the lenses
  830. LacksHead Admin
    it's not free lolyea
  831. 12Me21Admin
    almost free
  832. LacksHead Admin
they svertised it as "Virtually free VR "
  833. 12Me21Admin
compared to the price of actual headsets which are like $500
  834. LacksHead Admin
  835. snail_
I wouldn't use VR on my phone, is my pointthis is not a screen made to view right in your face
  836. LacksHead Admin
    well, duh
  837. snail_
SOME phones, sure. Samsung was early to this.
  838. 12Me21Admin
well maybe that's just your phone
  839. LacksHead Admin
you got like an lg chocolate
  840. snail_
    but not most phones
  841. 12Me21Admin
iPhones seem to work decentlyoh no now everyone's going to complain about applecrap
  842. snail_
yeah ok I used my phone as an example hoping you wouldn't realize I had a cheap one, but it was a shitty example of me trying to prove a pointmy phone is like 4 years old so I'm out of the loop I guess
  843. 12Me21Admin
well my phone is umprobably pretty old let me check
  844. LacksHead Admin
my argument for Nintendo vs Sony vs Microsoft is not that one is BETTER than the other. It's that one is WORSE than the others. And like you said "We can play other consoles" Well, no you can't if nintendo keeps making these idiotic decisions and drives away consumers. Soon, in my opinion this is their last console. And based on their mobile branch out, the 3ds is doa soon tooyou guys are not consumersyou have no jobyou can't pay for your own goodsget a job, you can't walk into a cell store without being offered the new hotness for free
  845. snail_
oh that's all true, I don't really disagree at allbut I like some of the games and that's all I have to say I guess lol
  846. 12Me21Admin
I'm just worried that if nintendo fails, we won't get a good handheld like the 3DS we'll be stuck with home consoles and horrible phones forever
  847. LacksHead Admin
support the console thenI agree, 12
  848. snail_
yeah I was gonna buy a switch
  849. LacksHead Admin
I prefer a dedicated handheld to mobile any day of the weekthe jack of all trades phone is nice, but it's better to have a master of one
  850. snail_
I'm easy to sell to if I don't have many options
  851. PhilFish
I-I just remembered the dream I had last night what the fuck dreams
  852. LacksHead Admin
(Which is why sony kicked microsofts ass. Microsoft went full MEDIA DEVICE! and sony went Fuck that, want some games, yo?)
  853. snail_
    - modular design is cool INSTANT BUY
  854. PhilFish
what the actual fuck does my brain do while I'm asleep
  855. LacksHead Admin
have you looked into the modular cell phone
  856. snail_
people say dreams are your brain reorganizing and processing information while you sleep
  857. LacksHead Admin
that has like camera swaps and speaker swappables
  858. PhilFish
    that's one theory
  859. snail_
your brain isn't busy with other things so it can focus on information order
  860. 12Me21Admin
I say it's your brain interpreting random noise as memories or something
  861. snail_
yeah Google's Ara or whatever? that shit died pretty quicklywhich is unfortunate
  862. LacksHead Admin
And your pineal gland pumping DMT throughout your bodydon't forget that
  863. snail_
    lol yeah
  864. PhilFish
well this is certainly not a memorywait isn't DMT a drug
  865. LacksHead Admin
    naturally produced by your body
  866. snail_
I think the organization theory makes the most sense, but there's lots of factors involved anyway
  867. LacksHead Admin
    and in most plants
  868. snail_
yeah most psychoactive chemicals are produced naturally, that's why they are active
  869. 12Me21Admin

even though you'll eventually move on to higher constructs starting with GOTO isn't a bad way to understand structure

so is learning to breathe and yet we do that wrongand learning to run
  1250. snail_
which is why BASICs are good learning languages IMO
  1251. 12Me21Admin
I think trying to teach things like Javascript as a first language is much more difficult
  1252. randomouscrap
the easy way is not always the better way
  1253. 12Me21Admin

  1266. randomouscrap
we breathe correctly for much of the start of our life, but then for some reason we start doing it wrong
  1267. 12Me21Admin
breathing is done automatically, you don't have to learn it but we can control it and you can do that wrong I ugess*I guess
  1268. randomouscrap
and then we all become shallow breathers who become entirely out of breath as soon as we actually need to breathe
  1269. 12Me21Admin
I sometimes wish that things like heart rate, etc. were controllable but we'd probably just end up killing ourselves
  1270. pixel_voxel
    manually breathe
  1271. randomouscrap
and then you join band and they have to teach you how to breathe properly again
  1272. snail_
anyway JavaScript isn't suited to a learning language for reasons other than objects
  1273. SquareFingers
You do have to learn breating for choir, or serious singing.
  1274. snail_
its type discipline is pretty vague and bad depending on implementation
  1275. randomouscrap
It's like... you have a muscle DEDICATED to your lungs (the diaphragm) and everyone just forgets about it
  1276. snail_
and yeah you need a whole web browser and some HTML to start learning it
  1277. 12Me21Admin
we need to make BASIC great again
  1278. snail_
python is probably a good language to learn on, aside from the white space thing
  1279. 12Me21Admin
The problem with BASIC now is that you're like "ok I want to use BASIC what do I do" and it's like... "uh... well you can use a 3DS, or um download this other thing idk"
  1280. snail_
C wouldn't be too bad either as a secondary, in terms of design it's not THAT complex
  1281. randomouscrap
there's plenty of basic interpreters online
  1282. snail_
    and it's fairly regular
  1283. 12Me21Admin
"oh and if you learn BASIC on this one system it won't work anywhere else probably"
  1284. randomouscrap
c is an excellent language to start with. It's incredibly small and SO MANY modern languages are based off its syntax
  1285. snail_
My dream is to run into a C64 for really cheap and start using the BASICyeah but C lacks basic things like STRINGS (yeah char* counts I guess)
  1286. SquareFingers
I believe you can get a C64 emulator running on a Raspberry Pi.
  1287. 12Me21Admin
I don't know... you'd probably think old versions of BASIC are bad since you've used modern ones like SB
  1288. snail_
Yeah I've done emulators but they're weird. The keymap isnt normal.
  1289. randomouscrap
I think not starting with strings is excellent actually
  1290. 12Me21Admin
but strings are like my favorite thing in SB
  1291. SquareFingers
Heh. Try a Spectrum for wierd key usage.
  1292. randomouscrap
strings are a strange type that's usually treated differently than all other types and you never really learn why until much later
  1293. snail_
well, to a beginner, specific implementation details aren't THAT much of a worry, but I get it
  1294. randomouscrap
At least in C, all you deal with are numbers. Literally everything is a number. I think that's easier to understand than "yeah there's numbers... and then there's strings but strings are special and immutable and blah blah blah"
  1295. 12Me21Admin
    mutable strings are amazing
  1296. PhilFish
I wish strings in more languages were mutable

  1299. 12Me21Admin
strings in JS and other languages feel like arrays in SB almost like the language just BARELY supports them and they're a pain to work with compared to other things
  1300. randomouscrap
  1301. 12Me21Admin
if you want to edit a single character in a string in SB, you can do like STRING$[7]="AAAAA" but in JSI don't even know how I would do that
  1302. randomouscrap
I forget that this is a community centered around an ancient language and everyone has really weird programming ideals
  1303. PhilFish
I mean I mainly use C# these days, but there are many instances where I wish that mutable strings were a thing without having to use some special class or char[] or whatever
  1304. 12Me21Admin
like I can convert a string to lowercase IN PLACE in SB, but in JS i'd have to make a new string and return it
  1305. PhilFish
  1306. 12Me21Admin
all strings should at least let you change individual characters, even if you can't modify the length
  1307. PhilFish
if (string[i] is lowercase) string[i]-=some_constantand tada, to uppercase converter
  1308. randomouscrap
and how many things are referencing that string you just changed in place?
  1309. SquareFingers
If you want for components of the program to not be able to rely on string values, yeah.

  1311. 12Me21Admin

  1313. randomouscrap

  1314. PhilFish
just pass strings by value and never worry about it
1315. snail_ has entered the chat.
  1316. 12Me21Admin
I do wish more languages treated string characters like numbers so I could just do something like DEC STRING$[I]
  1317. randomouscrap
you should either have total control or total ease. If you start trying to mix the two you get language like C++ which do neither
  1318. SquareFingers
If carefulness can be automated, you get a more reliable system, generally.
  1319. randomouscrap
  1320. snail_
mutability is also one of those situational things

  1332. PhilFish

maybe in a more... low level(?)... language like C or whatever, having strings like SB would be badJavascript doesn't even have a function like SB's SUBST$ so it's even worse
  1341. snail_
    ECMAScript more specifically
  1342. 12Me21Admin
what do I do if I want to REPLACE characters in the middle of a string
  1343. snail_
"JavaScript" is maybe 70% web API standards
  1344. 12Me21Admin
without like dissecting the entire string with substr(ing)
  1345. randomouscrap
If you make the language too large (ie too many built in functions) you make the interpreter larger and slower to load. It takes more memory, and since javascript could be running on anything and you can't specify libraries to import, it's best to make it minimal
  1346. snail_
yeah, javascript is really small, the Web APIs provide a lot of the auxiliary functions
  1347. 12Me21Admin
JS has so many features, but half of them are either duplicates of other things, or horrible and unusable
  1348. randomouscrap
small scripts should be able to load on extremely low powered devices without loading a monolithic interpreter
  1349. SquareFingers
Lengthy can be ugly... but compared to other things, it turns out to be one of the least of the uglinesses.
  1350. snail_
what even is a JS symbol

in H# I made a workaround for that random
  1352. snail_
the @@ notation sucks, was one @ not enough?
  1353. 12Me21Admin
like substr and substring why do we need TWO string commands that do ALMOST the same thing and have COMPLETELY NON-DESCRIPTIVE NAMES
  1354. PhilFish
I did a first pass to detect which functions were being used, then load those functions, then execute on the second passthat way if, say, tostring() was never used, it was never loaded
  1355. snail_
that just sounds like bad core library design or something
  1356. 12Me21Admin

well String[index] isn't writable so it's kind of misleading
  1362. 12Me21Admin
    so why have it
  1363. snail_
at least, I don't think it is
  1364. randomouscrap
you should all just get very deep into c
  1365. 12Me21Admin
    it's not writable
  1366. snail_
yeah pretty much, why have it
  1367. SquareFingers
If you want to replace characters in the middle of a string, you want a new string. Identifying it as a new string is only sensible.
  1368. 12Me21Admin
you can do string[index]=string but it just ignores itSquareFingers, that's true, but JS doesn't even have a good way to do that
  1369. PhilFish
I've dabbled and made a few projects in C
  1370. randomouscrap
You may start to realize why modern languages are designed the way they are
  1371. snail_
yeah I tried to learn C once but I wasn't good enough at the programming thing yet to do anything very advanced
  1372. 12Me21Admin
you have to create two new strings and combine them
  1373. snail_
    also it was C++ whoops
  1374. 12Me21Admin
String variable = SUBST$( "Character string", Start position, [Number of characters,] "Substitute string" ) Substitutes one character string with another stringok that description sucks
  1375. PhilFish
C is nice but I REFUSE to use it for anything big
  1376. snail_
whyC scales pretty nicely if you know what you're doing I think
  1377. randomouscrap
    It depends snail
  1378. snail_
    this isn't C++ or anything
  1379. PhilFish
mainly because I suck ass at memory management and know like 0.001% of the libraries
  1380. 12Me21Admin
javascript really needs a command like SB's, SUBST$, which returns a new string, which is the original string with some characters replacedit's not useful in SB because SB has mutable strings, buit*butin JS it would be so nice
  1381. PhilFish
C is great don't get me wrong I just personally am bad at it
  1382. randomouscrap
if you are careful, you can easily make large projects in C. But you have to be REALLY careful and make sure you don't do anything cute
  1383. snail_
the reason immutable strings exist is less a problem of language design and more a problem of memory management.
  1384. 12Me21Admin
I'm not complaining about immutable strings so much anymore, just
  1385. snail_
it's more efficient to only keep a copy of a string's contents ONCE in memoryif two strings have the same contents, point them to the same heap thingy
  1386. 12Me21Admin
just complaining about a lack of commands to make them less badunfortunately adding new features to JS takes a few decades since you have to wait for browsers to support them
  1387. snail_
a string can LOOK mutable to the end user as long as you aren't doing anything funny.
  1388. randomouscrap
that's why you make a monolithic library (like I'm doing) and put everything you want the language to have in there
  1389. snail_
plus if a string's contents only occur once you have hashing etc
  1390. SquareFingers
No, it's more about robustnesd than memory management.
  1391. 12Me21Admin

  1396. 12Me21Admin
like if I just need SUBST$ in javascript I don't want to include a massive file for it
  1397. snail_

  1410. randomouscrap
"I want bitvectors" ... "gotta make it myself"
  1411. snail_
COPY is awesome because it's versatile
  1412. 12Me21Admin
JS doesn't even have string formatting
  1413. snail_
    it's not exactly friendly
  1414. 12Me21Admin
well nobut it's great for use in functions
  1415. snail_
a bitvector isn't hard to do though, but maybe that's because I use strings to make mineI remember I made a CRC-16 string function, it was pretty easy
  1416. 12Me21Admin
in SB, the more layers of functions you add, the slower it getsthat's true in any languagenot because functions are slow, but becausewhen using the same function for multiple things, you have to have parts that don't get used for everythingunnecessary checks and things
  1417. randomouscrap
well yeah that's because crc only requires an integeryou don't even need a vector

  1437. 12Me21Admin

  1438. snail_

  1443. snail_
  1444. SquareFingers
After a while, 'good' becomes a higher priority than 'fast'. 'Good' can lead to quantum leaps in speed, whereas focussing on 'fast' only leads to incrementals.
  1445. snail_
    this is true
  1446. randomouscrap
on modern systems, the only speed you should worry about is the algorithm's complexity upper bound (usually)
  1447. 12Me21Admin
but in SB, "fast" basically just involves using builtin functions
  1448. Lumage
    yeah please switch tabs comfortably

there's always a BEST way to do something in SB, that BEST way is often easier to find than in other languages
  1459. randomouscrap
yeah but there's more than one person here with a foot fetishthat might be um... problematic
  1460. 12Me21Admin
maybe partly because SB has fewer features than other langauges
  1461. Lumage
Oh I guess we shouldn't then.Hands was fun though.
  1462. snail_
    >yeah but there's more than one person here with a foot fetishyou know this how?
  1463. randomouscrap
    Because they've told me
  1464. Lumage
    they're his clients
  1465. snail_
    ah yes.
  1466. 12Me21Admin
I think it's easier to understand EVERYTHING about SB than it is to understand EVERYTHING about a "real" language
  1467. snail_
I can't personally say I've STUDIED any in depth but I've fiddled about in a diverse set I thinkmy learning is incomplete.
  1468. SquareFingers
Sprites and BG and sound and everything?
  1469. randomouscrap
I wonder if anybody here has a navel fetish
  1470. Lumage
navels are dumb I'd rather have a slim abs fetish
  1471. 12Me21Admin
    almost everything
  1472. snail_
  1473. randomouscrap
navel fetishes aren't restricted to deep navels
  1474. snail_
SB is simple on the surface
  1475. LacksHead Admin
Thin waist fetish. Does that count?
  1476. SquareFingers
Or a small 'everything' where it suits your point, and a large 'everything' where that suits your point?
  1477. 12Me21Admin
I understand sprites almost fully, BG a bit less, and sound is just a pain to work with because how do you even test sound
  1478. snail_
    but underneath it's pretty weird
  1479. Lumage
    I didn't say it was.
  1480. snail_
    this is true of everything
  1481. randomouscrap
no, it has to be specifically the belly button
  1482. snail_
12 you should probably get out while you still can
  1483. randomouscrap
you have to be fixated on the belly button to have this fetish
  1484. snail_
    he has you now
  1485. 12Me21Admin
  1486. randomouscrap
you could probably sit down and understand the entirety of C in an afternoon
  1487. 12Me21Admin
I think I'm pretty good at writing code in Javascript, but I learn about "new" features all the time where in SB I very rarely find anything new, except for bugs and undocumented things
  1488. snail_
I'm imaging an eagle with its talons outstretcheddiving in for the kill
  1489. randomouscrap
There are like 4 types, 20 keywords, and uhhh 12 symbols or something
1490. Perska has left the chat.
1491. Perska has entered the chat.
  1492. 12Me21Admin
maybe my experience with JS has messed up my perception of "real" languages
  1493. snail_
the mechanics of C take a bit more understanding though
  1494. 12Me21Admin
but in SB I can easily write the fastest function to, say, convert a string to uppercase
  1495. Perska
man it'd be nice if xChat didn't kill my connection to the chat everytime i reconnect
  1496. 12Me21Admin
because it's simple and there's only a few ways to do it
  1497. randomouscrap
it's a rather harmless fetish, honestly. Even if you get really weird with it it's usually not bad
  1498. Lumage
I hate applied statistics it turns out.
  1499. 12Me21Admin
and I know which commands are fast and which are slow
  1500. LacksHead Admin
    Belly buttons stink. Pass lol
  1501. snail_
you've spent a lot of time though.
  1502. randomouscrap
It's easy to understand the mechanics of C if you don't try to apply existing knowledge to it
  1503. snail_
    more than most people
1504. Perska has entered the chat.
1505. Perska has left the chat.
  1506. randomouscrap
the mechanics of C are basically values and pointers. It's extremely simple if you don't try to figure out how pointers relate to modern constructs
  1507. snail_
it might not be hard but it's a time sink 12
  1508. 12Me21Admin
maybe it's the same with SB if you're used to "real" languages, working with SB might be harder
  1509. snail_
yeah I came to SB off BASIC already as well
  1510. randomouscrap
there's not even pass by reference and pass by value. It's ALL pointers and values. It makes learning it much easier because you just have to ask "is it a pointer or is it a value"
  1511. 12Me21Admin
    pointers are nice maybe
  1512. SquareFingers
SB lacks some fundamentals that make it awkward.
  1513. snail_
    rust looks really cool
  1514. LacksHead Admin
I wonder why chat is so obsessed with fetishes and masturbation of late.
  1515. randomouscrap
seriously, if you were to just sit down and learn C's mechanics from a place that wasn't trying to apply modern programming paradigms to your C tutorial, you'd easily understand it
  1516. 12Me21Admin
  1517. snail_
    I think I see pointers
  1518. SquareFingers
Functions being first-class values, comes to mind. User-defined data types.
  1519. randomouscrap
I'm the one who usually talks about fetishes I think. I'm sorry
  1520. snail_
more like random is obsessed with fetishes all the time
  1521. randomouscrap
I can't speak for masturbation; that's MBR I believeand phil
  1522. 12Me21Admin
Yeah I wish SB had more features like that
  1523. PhilFish
  1524. 12Me21Admin
    even things like constants
  1525. snail_
functions aren't first class in a lot of environments though
  1526. Lumage
lilstrubel can't stop talking about asiansphil and record are horny teens
  1527. snail_
Unless I'm missing something about C.
  1528. PhilFish
    b-but I haven't masturbated for almost 2 weeks though
  1529. LacksHead Admin
Lol those are two names that haven't talked wanking with me XD
  1530. 12Me21Admin
if SB had macros, I think you could hack in a lot of featuresI remember I made "arrays" in tiny computer using macros
  1531. randomouscrap
Snail it's even easier than that
  1532. snail_
SB is just awkward enough that it can be bent to your will if you're a patient wizard
  1533. randomouscrap
Everything is a pointer or a value. Functions are values, and since pointers point to values, they can point to functions
  1534. snail_
    oh what
  1535. SquareFingers
    that makes it awkward*
  1536. PhilFish
lacks do you like answering the bone-a-phone?
  1537. snail_
so in C you can use higher order functions?
  1538. randomouscrap
you can have function pointersAgain, don't try to apply modern ideas and constructs into C. C is a simple thing
  1539. 12Me21Admin
I write code in SB for fun even though I know no one will use it
  1540. randomouscrap
"higher order function" is a concept for languages that try to do this
  1541. snail_
    ok fine
  1542. 12Me21Admin
Which I can't say for any other language
  1543. snail_
12 do you like programming even
  1544. 12Me21Admin
I only use Javascript when I need to do something useful
  1545. PhilFish
and chat went silentmy cue to leave
  1546. 12Me21Admin
    well, ok
1547. PhilFish has left the chat.
  1548. LacksHead Admin
Idk what the joke your trying to make is.
  1549. 12Me21Admin
that was a bit of an exaggeration
  1550. Lumage
what about my trying to make
  1551. 12Me21Admin
but I have a lot more fun with SB than JS
  1552. snail_
    >Like normal data pointers, a function pointer can be passed as an argument and can also be returned from a function.so a higher order function. this is all I was asking thanks
  1553. randomouscrap
that's because there's no distinction between a function pointer and any other pointerThey're all just pointers. They point to memory
  1554. pixel_voxel
you were talking about programming languages a (PERCEIVED) moment ago and now what is this
  1555. 12Me21Admin
function pointers ah I remember random asking about CALL in SB and I said not to use it
  1556. snail_
    yes I get that
  1557. Lumage
    this time it's my fault
  1558. snail_
    it's in the better tab
1559. PhilFish "answering the bone-a-phone" is another name for "choking the chicken" if you know what I mean
  1560. randomouscrap
People like to make it complicated by making all these names for things that are really just "it's a pointer". You can just make a void pointer and point it anywhere in memory
  1561. snail_
I understand what a pointer is, yes
  1562. pixel_voxel animal cruelty
  1563. 12Me21Admin
And then the other thing I like about SB is how it has a lot of features without being COMPLICATEDlike if I want a timer, I can just use MILLISEC or MAINCNT, or TIME$
  1564. snail_
    it's pretty complicated/
  1565. randomouscrap
but learning the concept of first order functions isn't necessary for learning C. That's all I'm trying to say: you don't need to learn all the special concepts to learn C because it's just a very small and simple language that doesn't have concepts
  1566. 12Me21Admin
I guess sprites and BG are complicated, but they need to be
  1567. snail_
    do they?
  1568. 12Me21Admin
at least I don't need to load a library for just displaying text
  1569. LacksHead Admin
I approve of this animal cruelty. It's just self harm
  1570. 12Me21Admin
    wait don't say anything
  1571. snail_
does SPANIM need to be so annoying
  1572. Perska
why is there no way to lock the cursor to one window in windows i had to do something this ridiculous
  1573. 12Me21Admin
I know libraries are good but I still find them annoying
1574. PhilFish how is it self harm broseph
  1575. 12Me21Admin
SPANIM isn't so badremember most of the "confusing" parts of SB are the manual being bad
1576. Lumage has left the chat.
  1577. snail_
    perska what is window docking
  1578. randomouscrap
lol "you must unlearn what you have learned" is a great way to learn Cthanks yoda
  1579. 12Me21Admin
    DEF UCASE$ STRING$ VAR I%,L%=LEN(STRING$)-1 FOR I%=0 TO L% VAR C=ASC(STRING$[I%]) IF C>=97 && C<=122 THEN STRING$[I%]=CHR$(C-32) NEXT ENDok this might be faster
  1580. snail_
SPANIM doesn't let you include multiple animation targets in one dataset
  1581. 12Me21Admin
ah crap C should be integer
  1582. snail_
    needlessly complicated
  1583. Perska
  1584. 12Me21Admin
now THAT would be complicatedsince SB doesn't have any data structures beyond arraysand not even array literals
  1585. snail_
then maybe it should get better data structures
  1586. 12Me21Admin
    I agree
  1587. snail_
and DATA is always an option
  1588. 12Me21Admin
    (ew data_)
1589. Lumage has entered the chat.
  1590. snail_
oh are we writing lisp now
  1591. 12Me21Admin
but back to my other point SB has nice simple input/output
  1592. Lumage
also if you can convince pixel to inhale programming again I'll give you virtual currency
  1593. randomouscrap
I really want to play dori dori again
  1594. Perska
whoa the magnifying glass tool freaks out with a weird monitor placement
  1595. snail_
well most languages have decent standard stream handlingthat's a given
  1596. 12Me21Admin
if I want to display an image in Javascript, I have to have a canvas, and mess with the imagedata, and all thatand in C IDK some library or something
  1597. snail_
    that's something entirely different though
  1598. 12Me21Admin
not that this makes the languages BAD
  1599. snail_
    different goals
  1600. 12Me21Admin
or that there's a problembut it does make SB more fun
  1601. snail_
Lumage: what kind of virtual currency
  1602. Perska
  1603. 12Me21Admin
of course C shouldn't have builtin functions like DIALOG() in SB
  1604. snail_
SB is pretty good for rapid prototypingthat's why I like it
  1605. 12Me21Admin
  1606. randomouscrap
in C you import SDL, allocate a window, allocate an image buffer from a file, then place the image within the window
  1607. Lumage
    uhh chatcoins or cgame coins
  1608. snail_
if I were to REALLY build a game, I'd use a PC
  1609. randomouscrap
    and then redraw the window
  1610. 12Me21Admin
in SB you just do the thing you want to do
  1611. snail_
but a prototype in SB can be done in like half the time
  1612. 12Me21Admin
    without any setup
1613. PhilFish has entered the chat.
  1614. Lumage
    "You now have 2371708 [cgame]coins"
  1615. randomouscrap
You know WHY though ,don't you 12me?
  1616. 12Me21Admin
  1617. PhilFish
lumage I'll do it for 10 bitcoins
  1618. Lumage
    I don't have any bitcoin.sorry.
  1619. randomouscrap
I read that as... well a bad thing
  1620. 12Me21Admin
of course there's the problem that SB only works on the 3DS, and it has to has the graphics stuff loaded ALL THE TIME even when you don't use it
  1621. snail_
ohh perska that's a multi monitor setupI thought you had your actual desktop windows like that
  1622. PhilFish
  1623. Lumage
I can give you a pokemon global offensive code
  1624. 12Me21Admin
actually I wonder if I use VISIBLE to turn off the graphics screen, if SB will run fasterI think graphics updates are handled by the gpu maybe so idk
  1625. snail_
    it probably just hides it
  1626. Perska
yeah not sure why i used "lock to a window" when i should've used "lock to a monitor" instead
  1627. 12Me21Admin
    that's possible too
  1628. randomouscrap
    it may make vsync faster
  1629. 12Me21Admin
    VSYNC the command?
1630. SquareFingers has left the chat.
  1631. snail_
this isn't like PTC where turning off every feature ever and not using whitespace makes your program run at 800000x speed
  1632. randomouscrap
no wait I'm sorrynm I was thinking of something else
  1633. 12Me21Admin
yeah I'm so glad SB doesn't run slower with whitespace and commentsI remember reading a comment in a program that was basically 'this code was so nicely documented but it made the game run at 10FPS
  1634. snail_
because someone at smileboom took a compiler design course and said "look what I learned"and now we have an abstract syntax tree
  1635. Lumage
  1636. snail_
are you suggesting there should be a hotkey to swap your cursor between windowsI guess someone would find that useful
  1637. randomouscrap
was that my program?I put that in Village I think
  1638. 12Me21Admin
it might have beenyeah"Space has one clear advantage over tab: there is still no reliable standard for how many spaces a tab represents, but it is universally accepted that a space occupies a space. So always use spaces." what is this logic that's a reason NOT to use spaces normally people use 4 spaces for indenting, but there's no reason why you couldn't use 3 or 5 where tabs are always 1 tab = 1 indent level plus with space indenting you have to press the space bar FOUR times, and you can accidentally press it the wrong number of times ALSO with tab indenting, you have a DEDICATED character for indenting code, so you can use spaces for ALIGNING the code and tabs for INDENTING
  1639. snail_
no this actually makes a lot of sense, because some people are like INDENTING IS THIS SIZE AND THAT'S IT
  1640. randomouscrap
what happens when the tab character is a different width
  1641. snail_
also your code is slightly more portable
  1642. randomouscrap
tabs only work for certain tab widths
  1643. 12Me21Admin
nothing happens when the tab character is a different width
  1644. randomouscrap
    Yes it does. Here, look
  1645. 12Me21Admin
just as nothing happens when you use a different font sizeor a different character height:width ratio
  1646. snail_
mixing spaces and tabs is a recipe for disaster
  1647. randomouscrap
Some thing 'A comment Some tabbed thing 'A commentWhat happens then?
  1648. 12Me21Admin
you shouldn't align comments like that I guess
  1649. snail_
are the comments aligned with tabs or spacesthis matters
  1650. randomouscrap
    It doesn't matter snail
  1651. 12Me21Admin
    (tabs)output += Highlighter.escapeHTML(code.substring(pos, highlight.start)) + (tabs) "<span class=\"" + highlight.className + "\">" + (tabs) Highlighter.escapeHTML(code.substring(highlight.start, highlight.end)) + (tabs) "</span>";look
  1652. randomouscrap
    It would still be unaligned
  1653. 12Me21Admin
if I used space indenting hereit would think I was INDENTING the other lineswhen I'm actually aligning them past the +=
  1654. snail_
hm yeah I guess it would be
  1655. PhilFish
    anyone here watched Berserk?
  1656. 12Me21Admin
and if I used spaces, and someone tried to convert them to tabs, it would mess up
  1657. randomouscrap
If the tabs were 4 characters it might require 3 tabs for the first comment to line up, but if the tabs were 10 characters how would they line up?
  1658. 12Me21Admin
tabs are always 4 characters in any good editor
  1659. randomouscrap
    You cannot assume this
  1660. Lumage
  1661. 12Me21Admin
also aligning comments like that isn't super important
  1662. snail_
sometimes I set tab to 3 or 2I'm a bad coder
  1663. randomouscrap
The point of a tab is to be variable width
  1664. 12Me21Admin
    ok I actually
  1665. randomouscrap
    OK here's another example
  1666. 12Me21Admin
sometimes used 3 character tabsand you're only addressing one of my points
  1667. snail_
I use tabs to indent lines but alignment past that is all spacestabs to the left, spaces to the right
  1668. 12Me21Admin
of coursetabs at the end of a line aren't good
  1669. snail_
so I don't usually have alignment issuesand I can shrink my indent size if my code gets really long and hard to read
  1670. Lumage
no whitespace to the left, nbsp to the right
  1671. randomouscrap
    CONST A = 89 CONST B = 90 CONST AD = 100
  1672. snail_
and in a LOT of places, tab defaults to 8 spaces
  1673. randomouscrap
Except line up the equals lol
  1674. snail_
    so have fun.
  1675. 12Me21Admin
ok what does that have to do with tabs and spaces
  1676. snail_
he's saying if you did that with tabs it wouldn't be aligned right
  1677. randomouscrap
To get those values to line up, you would NEED to use spaces
  1678. 12Me21Admin
  1679. randomouscrap
Now you have tabs and spaces mixed
  1680. 12Me21Admin
yes spaces in the middle of the line
  1681. Lumage
I'm pretty sure tabs vs. spaces is for indentation. What does the middle of the line have to do with it
  1682. 12Me21Admin
they're serving different purposesyou use spaces for ALIGNMENT, tabs for INDENTINGthat way you don't have ambiguity
  1683. snail_
I agree with the "tabs and spaces serve different purposes" argument
  1684. randomouscrap
    Comment alignment IS important btw
  1685. 12Me21Admin
it's a small price to payAnd what about the fact that space indenting takes longer to type and edit? Plus you can actually make mistakes with space indenting, like typing 3 spaces instead of 4,
  1686. randomouscrap
OK I'm sorry I'm pointlessly arguing
  1687. Lumage
most editors do spaces for you
  1688. randomouscrap
You have never worked with large systems that use tabs
  1689. 12Me21Admin
There's just ONE disadvantage with tab indentingI thinkunless there are more
  1690. Lumage
but it does make it more annoying to write in notepad and stuff
  1691. snail_
yeah many editors insert spaces and do autoformatting with tabs
  1692. randomouscrap
I have done it way too often and I absolutely hate it. I always HAVE to make sure my tabs align with theirs if I want to extend their code
  1693. snail_
    not all of them though
  1694. 12Me21Admin
I guess you can't type tabs in browserswhat do you mean random?
  1695. snail_
I never use tabs to align comments or stuff in the middle of the line, that's just insane
  1696. randomouscrap
Because in the real world (the place that matters), people DO align comments
  1697. 12Me21Admin
you can't align comments when you use tabs
  1698. snail_
    yes please align comments properly
  1699. randomouscrap
If I want to add to their structure that has aligned comments and they used tabs to align everything, I HAVE to make sure my tabs are the same as theirs
  1700. 12Me21Admin
put your comments on their own linesnot at the end of other lines
  1701. randomouscrap
I have to force my tab width to be whatever they picked, and sometimes it was 8
  1702. 12Me21Admin
    ew 8 space tabs
  1703. snail_
    oh god
  1704. 12Me21Admin
  1705. randomouscrap
Do you see what I mean?People are different
  1706. 12Me21Admin
at least they didn't use 8 space bar presses
  1707. randomouscrap
I would much rather just deal with their spaces then to figure out what horrible tab width they've set
  1708. snail_
at least they didn't use 0.5 a presses
  1709. randomouscrap
Tabs are dependent on the editor and the person. Spaces are always constantthanwow I'm being bad
  1710. 12Me21Admin
alright, we still have just ONE problem with tabs though
  1711. Lumage
are we going to go through every single programming controversy today
  1712. 12Me21Admin
    which is inconsistent width
  1713. Lumage
let's do vim versus emacs next
  1714. 12Me21Admin
    where spaces have many problems
  1715. randomouscrap
what are the problems with spacesFile size? Like that's ever an issue
  1716. 12Me21Admin
no not thatI'm not that bad
  1717. randomouscrap
Deleting? Nearly every editor has a command to delete all spaces or the entire line
  1718. snail_
use minifiers in productioneveryone knows this
  1719. randomouscrap
    Most editors automatically insert spaces
  1720. 12Me21Admin
    if you don't have one of thoseor if the one you use is brokenthere's ambiguity between indenting and alignment(tabs)output += Highlighter.escapeHTML(code.substring(pos, highlight.start)) + (tabs) "<span class=\"" + highlight.className + "\">" + (tabs) Highlighter.escapeHTML(code.substring(highlight.start, highlight.end)) + (tabs) "</span>";
  1721. randomouscrap
Most editors will figure out how many spaces to insert based on the formatting of the rest of the document
  1722. 12Me21Admin
    see if I use spaces12Me21Admin output += Highlighter.escapeHTML(code.substring(pos, highlight.start)) + "<span class=\"" + highlight.className + "\">" + Highlighter.escapeHTML(code.substring(highlight.start, highlight.end)) + "</span>";crap
  1723. randomouscrap
You don't mix tabs and spaces though
  1724. 12Me21Admin
    I'm not
  1725. randomouscrap
you just use spaces everywhere and never use tabsIt says tabs right that
  1726. 12Me21Admin
the tabs are indenting and spaces are ALIGNMENTbut look what happens if I had used spaces
  1727. snail_
I use tabs to indent my lines and nobody will prevent me. If an editor inserts spaces when I use the tab key, I don't care lolas LONG as I can use the tab key, I'm fine
  1728. 12Me21Admin
    output += Highlighter.escapeHTML(code.substring(pos, highlight.start)) + "<span class=\"" + highlight.className + "\">" + Highlighter.escapeHTML(code.substring(highlight.start, highlight.end)) + "</span>";CRAP WHAThold onsorry this isn't the example. output += Highlighter.escapeHTML(code.substring(pos, highlight.start)) + "<span class=\"" + highlight.className + "\">" + Highlighter.escapeHTML(code.substring(highlight.start, highlight.end)) + "</span>";
  1729. snail_
but yeah I usually use spaces for alignment and tabs for just indenting
  1730. Lumage
    hang on though
  1731. 12Me21Admin
so, we have a problem hereBECAUSE
  1732. Lumage
if your editor can already autofill spaces why not just let it export as spaces and import as tabs
  1733. snail_
I much prefer pressing one key to indent than pressing space a lot
  1734. Lumage
and then write in tabs anyway
  1735. 12Me21Admin
    . output += Highlighter.escapeHTML(code.substring(pos, highlight.start)) + . . . . "<span class=\"" + highlight.className + "\">" + . . . . Highlighter.escapeHTML(code.substring(highlight.start, highlight.end)) + . . . . "</span>";
  1736. snail_
but if my editor can autoformat FOR me, that's even better
  1737. 12Me21Admin
  1738. randomouscrap
when I press the tab key it inserts spaces for me
  1739. 12Me21Admin
it thinks THOSE ARE INDENTINGWHEN THEY ARE NOTHAI hate when tab key insert spaces
  1740. Lumage
    yeah powershell does it
  1741. snail_
    12 I don't get it
  1742. 12Me21Admin
if there's an editor that adds indenting guides, or someone tried to convert my spaces to tabs
  1743. Lumage
and then when I want to go down an indentation level by pressing left it's just... spaces.
  1744. snail_
indenting and alignment has no semantic significance if you aren't python
  1745. 12Me21Admin
it will think my ALIGNMENT spaces are INDENTINGand mess my alignment upand then the code looks bad
  1746. snail_
  1747. LacksHead Admin
Pokemon global offensive? That's one way to breathe new life into counter strike and pokemon
  1748. 12Me21Admin
I think this is equally as bad as the line end comment thing
1749. SquareFingers has entered the chat.
  1750. randomouscrap
There's no difference between spacing for indenting and spacing for alignment. They're all just spaces used to push something over
  1751. 12Me21Admin
yes there iswell those are my namesfor thembut the indenting is standardized, and can be done automatically
  1752. randomouscrap
mixing the two is kinda annoying because now if I'm somewhere in the middle of that block of spaces AND tabs, I have to delete at EXACTLY the right place to fix alignment
1753. snail_ has left the chat.
  1754. 12Me21Admin
indenting: standardized insertion of tabs to make your code more readable (can be done automatically) alighnment: inserting spaces to make things line up, like when you split a command onto multiple lines (must be done by hand)using a different character for these makes it easy to add/remove indenting without messing up the alignment
  1755. randomouscrap
you're not making any sense though
  1756. 12Me21Admin
    see my example from before
  1757. randomouscrap
Your example doesn't make any sense either
  1758. 12Me21Admin
    . output += Highlighter.escapeHTML(code.substring(pos, highlight.start)) + . . . . "<span class=\"" + highlight.className + "\">" + . . . . Highlighter.escapeHTML(code.substring(highlight.start, highlight.end)) + . . . . "</span>";the dots are every 4 spaces
  1759. randomouscrap
If it's all just spaces you can just remove X spaces to fix the alignment*indenting
  1760. 12Me21Admin
it might look like there's indenting there, but actually it's alignment
  1761. randomouscrap
    what, to the editor?
  1762. 12Me21Admin
  1763. randomouscrap
I have never used an editor that can't figure that out.
  1764. SquareFingers
so, alignment is not insertion of white space to make code more readable? Or is your point that you're being nonstandard?
  1765. randomouscrap
    That's the magic of statements
1766. snail_ has entered the chat.
  1767. 12Me21Admin
I'm using more specific definitions here
  1768. randomouscrap
It knows that that last line is the end of a statement and will automatically go back to the regular indenting level
  1769. snail_
I'm more confused than I was before now
  1770. 12Me21Admin
    ok ok
  1771. pixel_voxel
    poisonous laugh
  1772. randomouscrap
Furthermore, it knows that if I'm continuing a line without ending the statement, it will follow the alignment of the previous line
  1773. 12Me21Admin
indenting is used to show where a block of code starts and endsyou can use tabs or spaces
  1774. snail_
not reallythe concept isn't any different
  1775. 12Me21Admin
but alignment (my definition), is when you use spaces to make things line up that aren't covered by indenting
  1776. snail_
"indentation" is just a more specific case of text alignment
  1777. 12Me21Admin
    yes I know
  1778. LacksHead Admin
Gotta love debate club with no moderator. This conversation is HARD to follow
  1779. 12Me21Admin
I need more specific definitions here to explain things
  1780. snail_
    coughnoxious fumes
  1781. snail_
    I agree lacksI'm totally lost
  1782. 12Me21Admin
    ok ok here
  1783. randomouscrap
If you had a clear idea that wasn't muddied with personal preferences this wouldn't be hard to explain
  1784. snail_
    and I'm involved
  1785. randomouscrap
Tabs vs. spaces have pros and cons
  1786. 12Me21Admin
    I know that
  1787. randomouscrap
One is not inherently better than the other for all situations
  1788. snail_
yes random is shutting everyone up jow
  1789. 12Me21Admin
but we've only found a single problem with tabs
  1790. LacksHead Admin
Is this argument about the way the code works or simply readability?
  1791. randomouscrap
If you are working with shared code, I would much rather have everything be spaces
  1792. 12Me21Admin
whereas spaces have MANY MANY problems
  1793. randomouscrap
If you are working by yourself, it is easier to use tabs
  1794. SquareFingers
I think your use of the word 'standard' will make the key distinction.
1795. ElzoBro has entered the chat.
  1796. snail_
If we're working with shared code I'd rather have a software that auto prettifies everything for all of us
1797. ElzoBro has left the chat.
  1798. snail_
that way, we don't care about who writes what
  1799. LacksHead Admin
Glad I chopped the afro off. It is bloody window today
  1800. randomouscrap
then you'd all have to use the same softwareAnd that's not fair
  1801. 12Me21Admin
    ~for (var i = 0; i < highlightList.length; i++) { ~~var highlight = highlightList[i]; ~~if (highlight.start >= pos) { //only highlight if it's past the end of the previous keyword ~~~if (highlight.className) ~~~~output += Highlighter.escapeHTML(code.substring(pos, highlight.start)) + ~~~~ "<span class=\"" + highlight.className + "\">" + ~~~~ Highlighter.escapeHTML(code.substring(highlight.start, highlight.end)) + ~~~~ "</span>"; ~~~else ~~~~output += Highlighter.escapeHTML(code.substring(pos, highlight.end)); ~~~pos = highlight.end; ~~} ~}
  1802. randomouscrap
    You're just editing
  1803. pixel_voxel
You should clean it in that case.
  1804. 12Me21Admin
so in this piece of code herethe ~ represent tabs
  1805. snail_
if we're on a company team, that's already the case probably
  1806. Lumage
    bloody window.
  1807. randomouscrap
12me why would it matter if those tildes are tabs or spaces
  1808. LacksHead Admin
  1809. 12Me21Admin
becausesee the other spaces?those are used for a different purpose
  1810. randomouscrap
Why would it matter if they're mixed
  1811. snail_
If I'm working with a company and we're all writing Java, we're probably all using eclipse already.
  1812. randomouscrap
The purpose is only in your head
  1813. snail_
    But I see your point
  1814. LacksHead Admin
Predictive text should try more or stop trying all together
  1815. PhilFish
ayyy I'm almost finished with Night of Knights hard on osu
  1816. 12Me21Admin
the tabs show where blocks of code start and endbut the spaces are there to make that one line of code look nicer
  1817. randomouscrap
argh am I going to have to work even harder to stay ahead of everyone now
  1818. Lumage
  1819. snail_
okay I give up I like the other tabrandom please add tab mute
  1820. randomouscrap
I only JUST beat my first 3.8 star song (although tbf it was super hard for a 3.8(=)
  1821. Lumage
I hope you're not referring to touhou because that's not even a good one
  1822. snail_
    knife of knifes
  1823. randomouscrap
But why does it matter if one is tabs and one is spaces
  1824. LacksHead Admin
Swap back and forth all Willy nilly! Fuck readability!
  1825. snail_
is that one sakuya or do I know nothing about 2hu
  1826. randomouscrap
The only difference is in your head. They're all invisible in the editor
  1827. 12Me21Admin
because I want them to be distinct
  1828. Lumage
    times of ktimes
  1829. randomouscrap
  1830. Lumage
    It's Sakuya yes.
1831. Trinitro21 has entered the chat.
  1832. PhilFish
    yes touhou
  1833. Trinitro21
  1834. 12Me21Admin
the whole point of indentation and alignment is so you can read the code better
  1835. randomouscrap
YOU want them to be distinct. Is there an actual objective reason that it's better
  1836. snail_
humans put things in categories can you really blame him lol
  1837. pixel_voxel
  1838. 12Me21Admin
because they're different things, so using a different character for them makes sense
  1839. randomouscrap
They are literally all invisible and you wouldn't knwo the difference unless you had tabs visible
  1840. snail_
  1841. LacksHead Admin
No! Play less Randy. Take a year off. Maybe I can catch you then :p
  1842. snail_
yeah only weirdos have whitespace visibility on
  1843. 12Me21Admin
I do have tabs visible so I can hunt down all the space indenting that gets added by our chatJS editor
  1844. snail_
  1845. Lumage
Okay but if it EVER matters whether spaces or tabs are used, there's a problem.
  1846. randomouscrap
You're still only arguing why you like tabs better
  1847. Lumage
And very very often, the editor does make it matter.
  1848. 12Me21Admin
    ok fine
  1849. randomouscrap
Not why tabs are somehow objectively better than spaces
  1850. 12Me21Admin
    they're quicker to type
  1851. snail_
    yawn.I'm exhausted physically
  1852. 12Me21Admin
and it's one character per indent level rather than an arbitrary four characters
  1853. PhilFish
gah it's right around the 3/4 complete mark where it goes to hell
  1854. randomouscrap
I have to get over 4 stars this weekend
  1855. snail_
    do you have to
  1856. randomouscrap
I was watching some auto replays of 4 star songs and I can totally do it
  1857. LacksHead Admin
  1858. PhilFish
random spectate me be shit at this song
  1859. randomouscrap
    I'm at work
  1860. 12Me21Admin
if you think 4 spaces is too much indenting, you can't do anything but if you don't like the tab size you can change it in the editor without modifying the code
  1861. PhilFish
    download osu at work
  1862. randomouscrap
I don't want them to see osu network activityHonestly I would.
  1863. LacksHead Admin
When you do get to 4* let me know. I wanna see that.
  1864. snail_
if you use a decent editor there's probably a shortcut for autoformatand settings for it as wellidk can emacs do that
  1865. randomouscrap
Indeed. Vim is an ancient editor and I can type gg=G and format the entire document based on my formatting rules
  1866. Trinitro21
  1867. snail_
    that's a lotta Gs
  1868. 12Me21Admin
I shouldn't need an automated system JUST so I can use spaces tabs work perfectly without any auto formating except for end of line comments
  1869. SquareFingers
See, if you widen your sense of what a 'block' is - not just a sequence of statements, but any sequence which is a syntactic/semantic unit (e.g. mathematical expressions), the distinction disappears.
  1870. Lumage
    you're a bad cat
  1871. randomouscrap
the ENTIRE document. All indenting to my desires, including alignment and wrapping^^
  1872. LacksHead Admin
Some of these beatmap are straight up impossible with just a mouse. I feel trapped at 2.5*
  1873. randomouscrap
I'm agreeing with SF a lot today
  1874. 12Me21Admin
    that doesn't work square
  1875. snail_
most good formatters know how to format your code as you type it though
  1876. 12Me21Admin
    it's too messy and nonstandardized
  1877. randomouscrap
go watch my replay of Primal Dialga
  1878. PhilFish
use MOUSE2 in conjunction with MOUSE1
  1879. 12Me21Admin
it makes sense in theory but in practice it won't work unless the language is designed for it
  1880. randomouscrap
It's a 3.8 star but man it's way harder than the 3.6 star I played
  1881. PhilFish
also lacks I'm over 3* now with a mouse so it's possible
  1882. Lumage
oh gosh I hated the primal dialga map
  1883. snail_
a lot of formatters have indent levels that work regardless of which character you use
  1884. randomouscrap
Dude that map is AMAZINGThis guy knows exactly how to make it coolFollowing the beat is boring. I KNOW the beat
  1885. Lumage
    Maybe the harder one then
  1886. snail_
wanna backspace an indent level? just press backspace
  1887. Lumage
    the normal was just meh
  1888. 12Me21Admin
ok, but why should I need a special tool just to write code at all
  1889. snail_
if your editor cant do that stop using notepad to edit your code
  1890. randomouscrap
This guy made up an awesome beat to the song that both flowed nicely and made sense but was still incredibly challenging
  1891. 12Me21Admin
I can't ALWAYS use the editor that I want to
  1892. Lumage
I got within a few seconds of beating that team galactic theme also lol
